Stones: An Innovative Sofa Design by Roberta Banqueri

Roberta Banqueri, a renowned designer, has created an innovative sofa design named "Stones". The design, which was inspired by the natural dispositions of stones, aims to redefine the experience of sitting. The unique properties of the Stones sofa lie in its flexibility and adaptability. Composed of three cushions, the sofa offers a myriad of seating possibilities, catering to the needs of diverse users. Its irregular form, reminiscent of stones, allows for malleability in assembly and usage, making it suitable for both sitting and lying down. The production of the Stones sofa involves the use of a wooden mold in the shape of OSB pieces. The structure is made of Lypitus wood, Italian straps, CBP foam with 28 density, and synthetic silicon fiber. The cloth, made manually with a loom from threads of high-strength polyester silk and warp in cotton threads, is a standout feature of the design. The cloth is reinforced with leather seams around the stem, ensuring durability and resistance to the effects of sitting.

The Stones sofa was conceptualized and completed in São Paulo, Brazil, between May and August 2018. It was exhibited at the High Design Expo in August 2018. The design process involved extensive research on the organic form of stones and their potential for daily usage. The main challenge faced during the design process was the application of the cloth on the product, as it was envisioned to be embraced by a cloth made manually by a carpet factory, a material unconventional for such a piece of furniture.
